The fifth-and-sixth grade team of Marble Falls Youth Football and Cheer continues to rack up wins without a loss.
The Mustangs’ (6-0) latest victory was against Cedar Park Oct. 8. Marble Falls led 30-0 at the half when the Timberwolves coaches thanked the Mustangs for the game and decided not to play the second half.
So just how dominant are the Mustangs? Marble Falls has scored 222 points this season and given up 18 to only one one opponent, Copperas Cove. The other five wins have been shutouts.
“It’s fun playing quarterback, and I like having leadership,” fifth-grader Nate Arana said. “I help make sure they listen and pay attention and making sure they get there on time. I like how fast the plays move.”
Fifth-grade quick tackle Hydee Mortenson is in her first year of playing for the team after being a cheerleader. She said she started watching the sport with her dad and decided to exchange her pom-poms for shoulder pads.
“I like it because it teaches you lessons,” she said of the sport. “It’s really fun. I get along with everyone. The people I play with are really good players and are very nice.”
She said being undefeated “was a bonus.”
Fifth-grade strong guard Liam Scales said the reasons for the team’s record are because of two groups.
“Our running backs and our defense,” he said. “Our defense is well taught. You have to wrap up and our defense is well blocked.”
He didn’t hesitate when asked if he liked being a guard.
“It’s great being a strong guard,” he said. “I can run around kids and throw kids to the ground when I pull.”
Scales said he and his teammates are “very motivated” to finish this season on a high note.
Next up for the Mustangs is a road game against Smithson Valley at Wimberley at 1:30 p.m. at Texan Stadium, 200 Texan Blvd. in Wimberley.
